When a player votes for your server on a server list, the list sends a small message to your server: "this player just voted". The plugin that receives that message is called Votifier. Today almost everyone uses NuVotifier, a newer version that works with every list and with proxies.
This guide shows how to install it on a Paper, Spigot or Purpur server, open its port and check that votes really arrive.
What NuVotifier does (and what it doesn't)
NuVotifier only receives votes. It doesn't give rewards by itself. To give players something in the game, you also need a reward plugin, also called a vote listener. The most used one is VotingPlugin: see how to set up VotingPlugin.
So the full chain looks like this:
- A player votes on a list, for example CraftVote.
- The list sends the vote to NuVotifier on your server.
- Your reward plugin hears about it and gives the reward.
Step 1: Download and install
- Download NuVotifier from its SpigotMC page or its GitHub releases.
- Put the `.jar` file in your server's `plugins` folder.
- Restart the server (a full restart, not a plugin reload).
On the first start, NuVotifier makes its own folder: `plugins/NuVotifier` (older versions use `plugins/Votifier`). Inside you find `config.yml` and a folder called `rsa` with two keys.
Step 2: Look at config.yml
Open `plugins/NuVotifier/config.yml`. The parts that matter look like this:
```yaml host: 0.0.0.0 port: 8192 tokens: default: 2a7bk3o1m8f0example0token ```
- host: leave it on `0.0.0.0` unless your host tells you otherwise. It means "listen on every address of this machine".
- port: the port NuVotifier listens on. The default is `8192`. It must be a different port from the one players join on (usually 25565).
- tokens: the secret a server list needs to send you votes. The line after `default:` is your token. Never post it in public.
Step 3: Open the port
This is the step most people miss. Votes come from outside, so the Votifier port has to be open, just like your game port.
- Game host with a panel (Pterodactyl and similar): open the Network or Ports tab and add a new port (sometimes called an allocation). Put that port number in `config.yml` as `port`, then restart.
- Your own machine or VPS: allow the port in your firewall (for example `ufw allow 8192/tcp`). At home, also forward the port on your router.
- Shared host without extra ports: ask their support for one more port "for Votifier". Most hosts do this for free.
The port only needs TCP.
Step 4: Add the token to the server list
Every list has a place for your Votifier details: the address, the port and the token (or the public key on older lists).
On CraftVote:
- Open My servers, then your server.
- Find the card Votifier: vote rewards and pick NuVotifier (token).
- Type the address and the Votifier port, and paste the token.
- Save.
The full walk through with pictures is in the Java server guide.
Step 5: Test it
On your server's page on CraftVote, type your own Minecraft name and press Send test vote. The card tells you what your server answered. If it says the vote was accepted, NuVotifier works.
If you also installed a reward plugin, you should get the reward in the game. If the vote arrives but nothing happens, the problem is in the reward plugin, not in NuVotifier.
Test failed? See NuVotifier not working? Common fixes.
Using a proxy (BungeeCord or Velocity)
With a proxy, votes go to the proxy, and the proxy passes them on to your game servers.
- Install NuVotifier on the proxy and on each game server behind it.
- On the proxy, give NuVotifier a port and open it. That is the address and port you give to server lists.
- Set up forwarding between them. The simplest way is plugin messaging: set `method` under `forwarding` to `pluginMessaging` on the proxy and on every game server, and set `port` to `-1` on the game servers.
NuVotifier's own setup guide covers the other forwarding options.
Quick checklist
- NuVotifier is in `plugins` and the server was restarted.
- The Votifier port is open at your host and is not the game port.
- The list has the right address, port and full token.
- A reward plugin is installed if you want rewards.
- A test vote from the list says "accepted".
Once this works, list your server on CraftVote and share your vote link with your players.
